5 Great Reasons To Visit Iceland

Iceland may not be at the top of your list of travel destinations. It does not have the clout of more popular tourist destinations like the Bahamas or Hawaii, and it's not a huge backpacker destination like the European countries. However, if you are looking for a truly unique, once-in-a-lifetime travel experience, then you should absolutely visit Iceland. Here are five great reasons to propel it to the top of your must-see list.

1. You can see the northern lights.

If you have always wanted to see the northern lights, or aurora borealis, there is no better place to go than Iceland. They are visible from September through April, so as long as you do not visit in mid-summer, you will get to see this natural wonder. The activity of the lights does vary by day, so you should plan on staying in Iceland for a week or more to increase your chances of spotting them on a high-activity day. You're most likely to see the lights in northern Iceland, since this area tends to stay darker for longer.

2. Reykjavik has amazing clubs and cafes.

If you're the type who likes to go out and party, enjoy unique music, or simply read a book in a cafe, then Reykjavik, Iceland, is a destination you must visit. The atmosphere feels like it's straight out of a poem, with coffee shops on most every corner and colorful buildings popping up along the streets. At night, the city transforms into an artistic, musical paradise. Local artists perform at clubs, often in the EDM genre. It's impossible to feel bored in Reykjavik, and you must plan to spend at least a few of your days in Iceland in this bustling, artistic city.

3. Iceland has gorgeous fjords.

Chances are, unless you have already traveled extensively in the Scandinavian region, you have never seen a fjord. It's a narrow inlet of sea that juts between high cliffs. Created by glaciers, fjords have a magical quality about them and are one of the most gorgeous natural wonders you will ever see. The coast of Iceland is laden with them—particularly in the Westfjord region to the northwest of the country. This mountainous area will make you feel more connected to nature, and the numerous fishing and farming villages in the area are also a must-see.

4. Icelandic horses are unique and majestic.

Whether you're an equestrian or you just admire horses for their beauty, you have to meet an Icelandic horse at least once in your life. These beautiful creatures are smaller than your typical horse. Height-wise, they would typically be classified as ponies, but because of their rugged nature, the breed registry considers them horses in spite of their small size. They perform a unique, smooth gait called the tölt, which they know innately from birth. Since the Icelandic people long used them for transportation across the rugged landscapes, they are sure-footed and hardy, though spirited.

5. You can relax in a lagoon.

Do you love how spending time in the water can make you feel more relaxed and at ease? Iceland is home to several stunning lagoons where you can just dream the day away. Jökulsárlón is one such lagoon, located in the southeast of Iceland. Another is Blue Lagoon, which is known for its stunning blue water. It's fed by mountain springs and is rich in minerals, so many people soak in it for healing benefits.

About Me
Touring New Places

A few years ago, I realized that I was really bored with my normal life. I needed to get out of the house, see something new, and really enjoy my surroundings. Although I was nervous about the prospects of travel, I knew that it was a necessary step if I wanted to make things happen. I began talking with different travel agencies about what they offered, and a friend of mine recommended a nice route that I thought would work for what I needed. They were really fantastic to work with, and before I knew it, I was on a plane headed for an exciting destination. Read more about travel on my blog.
